China Network

The Shanghai Network exists to link like-minded people from business and academia to each other and to peers around the world. With sister organisations in the world’s leading science cities such as Cambridge (UK) and Cambridge (US), the Shanghai Network is becoming a leading community of decision makers from technology enabled businesses. It is operated by volunteers and funded by sponsorship.
 
Next event:

In this spirit, on February 28th we are arranging a discussion followed by dinner with the theme: “R&D – what can Cambridge learn from Shanghai and Shanghai learn from Cambridge?” This has been enabled by generous sponsorship from Dorsey,  an international law firm with offices in both of these cities.
 
The discussion will be led by:
 
(for Shanghai)
-              Dr Danyi Dan (Head of Biology, ChemPartner  - a leading Chinese pharmaceutical CRS (Contract Research Service) provider 
-              Lingling Zhang ( Head of R&D, Mobile Business, Jabil Asia, a global leading ODM/EMS business.  Ex-Head of R&D, ZTE Shanghai - a global leading telecom equipment/handset vendor
-          Dr Dao-Zhi Liu, VP R&D, Microport Medical -  Chinese top medical device vendor - (tbc)
 
(for Cambridge)
-          Dr Peter Taylor (MD of the TTP Group – a leading technology services organization which has spun off several science enabled companies)
-          Jie Zhang (from BT Research Centre China – BT is one of UKs national telephone operators and now has interests worldwide)
 
..and moderated by Ying Yang and Peter Hewkin, who manage the Shanghai and Cambridge Networks respectively.
 
The discussion will take place over dinner at the Seagull Hotel with magnificent views over the Bund. Provisional timing is: 17:00 arrival and registration; 17:30  presentation and discussion  over dinner;  20 :00  network over post-dinner drink; 21:00  close.

Cambridge

This famous University has one of the strongest records of scientific excellence in the world. It has received 79 Nobel Prizes and was home to famous scientists and inventors including: Sir Isaac Newton (discovered gravity); Frank Whittle (invented the jet); Crick and Watson (discovered DNA). The University is surrounded by a 'cluster' of research institutes and entrepreneurial companies employing over 20,000 people. The

Cambridge Network

This is a community of over 1300 organisations from academia, business and finance in the Cambridge region who work together to promote the uptake of new ideas by business and to link Cambridge to 'the global community'. Its members include: University of Cambridge, University of Cranfield, ARM, Microsoft Research, IBM, BT, London Stock Exchange, 3i, WL Gore and Schlumberger. Its president is Professor Alison Richard - who is also vice-chancellor of the University of Cambridge. The Cambridge Network runs a wide range of events to link its members to each other and to the best financial and business partners around the world. Founded in 1999, it is funded uniquely by membership subscription - and does not receive government support. It has created sister organisations in Munich (Germany) and Boston (USA) where its members have significant interests. It has the ambition to create a similar organisation in China - probably based in Shanghai. These organisations include:

  • designers of silicon chips
  • designers of mobile phones
  • telecommunications service providers and consultants
  • ink-jet printing companies
  • universities
  • legal firms
  • civil engineers
  • scientific equipment companies
  • drug discovery companies
  • and many other disciplines These organisations meet together to share information about doing business with the People's Republic of China. This group has built up links with both the UK and the Chinese consultates.
