The University innovation network

Research collaborations and technology transfer take place at a variety of levels throughout the University, the city and in the industrial work place, with a number of organisations involved in facilitating the process.

  • The Research Services Division manages the University's contractual relationships with funders of research, including industrial collaborators, and the effective commercialisation of research results.

The Research Services Division promotes the commercial use of Cambridge University's research base through collaborative research programmes with industry, licensing of intellectual property, formation of start-up companies, and consultancies. The Technology Transfer Office (formerly the Wolfson Industrial Liaison Office) was founded in 1970 with an endowment from the Wolfson Foundation.

  • Cambridge Enterprise, part of the University's Research Services Division, exists to help University of Cambridge inventors, innovators and entrepreneurs make their ideas and concepts more commercially successful for the benefit of society, the UK economy, the inventors and the University.

Cambridge Enterprise brings the University's existing commercialisation activities previously performed by the Technology Transfer Office, the University Challenge Fund and the Cambridge Entrepreneurship Centre, together in one organisation, to enhance the University of Cambridge's contribution to society through knowledge transfer from the University to the community.

  • An established University initiative is the Cambridge Programme for Industry (CPI), which specialises in training senior management and technical professionals.

As the University's largest dedicated unit for professional and executive programmes, Cambridge Programme for Industry (CPI), designs and delivers world-class learning programmes nationally and internationally, focussing on issues of leadership and sustainable development. Its flagship programme is HRH The Prince of Wales's Business & the Environment Programme.

  • Cambridge University Entrepreneurs (CUE) encourages and supports start-ups in the university culminating in business plan competitions. Working with sponsors to provide high quality training and events, Cambridge University Entrepreneurs arms students with the skills and contacts to start world-beating companies.

  • There are also a wide variety of informal discussion groups bringing academics and industry together, including Cambridge University Local Industry Links (CULIL), a forum for people from the University and local industry to meet over dinner and discuss areas of mutual interest.

  • International collaborations also stimulate technology transfer and encourage diverse industrial links. International alumni associations, overseas visits and lecture exchange programmes also provide a wider understanding of the needs of overseas industry and generate an enormous amount of beneficial collaboration at every level.
