Fact:

  • Sir Fred Goodwin pushed Royal Bank of Scotland into the ABN Amro deal.
  • Tony Blair took Britain into Iraq.
  • Matthew Broderick, head of the operations centre responsible for crises in the US, reported, 12 hours after Hurricane Katrina had flooded New Orleans, that the levees had not been breached and went home for the night.
At the next Cambridge Business Lecture, Jo Whitehead (pictured, speaking in place of Andrew Campbell), Director of Ashridge Strategic Management Centre and prolific author, will explain why capable leaders make dumb decisions, and asks if we can do anything to reduce their frequency.

Jo is a Director of Ashridge Strategic Management Centre, which was formed in 1987 to research issues concerned with the management of multibusiness companies. His current research is into strategic decision making, building on prior research conducted at London Business School. Jo’s other interests includes running and providing management programmes and consulting to client companies.

Before joining Ashridge, Jo was a Vice President and Director of the Boston Consulting Group (BCG). He worked in the London, Los Angeles and Atlanta offices and acted as BCG’s Director of Energy Research and Marketing. Jo also worked as an Assistant Professor at London Business School, where he taught primarily on Executive Education programmes.

Jo has particular research, consulting and teaching experience with commodity industries, in particular the energy business. He holds an MA from Cambridge University, an MBA with High Distinction from Harvard Business School and a PhD in Strategy and Organisation from London Business School where he is currently a Fellow of the Centre for Management Development. Jo has recently co-authored the book Think Again - Why Good Leaders Make Bad Decisions and How to Keep it From Happening to You, with Andrew Campbell and Sydney Finkelstein (Harvard Business Press, 2009).

Jo will be speaking at Robinson College on 10 June at 6pm. The event is free, but you need to book a place at:
