Project will investigate benefits of team-based learning for business students

The funding from HEFCE (Higher Education Funding Council for England) is part of the £2.8million Catalyst Fund, which is being used to develop and evaluate small-scale experimental innovations in learning and teaching.

Catalyst Fund projects will run for a period of 18 months and active student engagement is a key aspect of the scheme.  Anglia Ruskin’s project, which is being led by the Lord Ashcroft International Business School, will look at delivering enhanced skills for postgraduate students through employer-informed team-based learning.

The project will involve 10 local employers, including ARM, Addenbrooke's NHS hospitals and Execujet, as well as professional bodies such as CIPD and CMI.

Dr Sally Everett, Deputy Dean of the Lord Ashcroft International Business School, said: “Students on the PGDip in Human Resource Management and the MSc in International Business will take part in the project, as these courses typically attract a diverse group of students with differing levels of experience.

“Employers seek problem-solving, team-working, and global awareness skills.  We will refine these skills to create high-performing postgraduates ready to make meaningful contributions to their employers.”

Dr Everett will work with Lord Ashcroft International Business School colleagues Dr Helen Benton and Dr Kevin Roe to examine the benefits of team-based learning, which uses a sequence of individual work, group work and feedback to create a motivational framework.

HEFCE will work with the projects to support their networking, evaluation and dissemination, so that the innovations and lessons learnt are shared with other providers across the whole higher education sector.

HEFCE’s Chief Executive, Madeleine Atkins, said: “We were delighted by the level of interest from universities and colleges in developing new ways of working and are pleased to be funding such an exciting range of learning and teaching innovations.  We look forward to working with the project organisations to share the lessons across the sector.”
