Google to open new UK office

Google, the company behind the world's largest Internet search engine, has named Manchester, north west England, as its main UK base outside London.

From the middle of November the city will become the hub of all the company's UK activities in the English Midlands, northern England, Wales and Scotland.

The company, which employs nearly 5,000 people worldwide, will open its Manchester office with a small number of specialist staff, but plans to recruit a larger team as demand for its services grows.

Kate Burns, who heads Google's operation in the UK, said: "Manchester is the north's creative capital, with 70,000 people employed in advertising, marketing, IT and the media. Coming to the city was an easy choice to make - we believe it offers the right environment for Google to extend its services across the UK."
