![]() Addenbrooke's Charitable Trust (ACT)Date: 19/02/09 Family’s ‘Swim the Channel Challenge’ raises over £2,000 With the support of two local IT firms, EACS Ltd of Kimbolton and Signify of Cambridge, the Stewart family from Girton has raised £2,062 for Tomotherapy (an innovative form of radiotherapy) at Addenbrooke’s, by completing a ‘Swim the Channel Challenge’ at their local swimming pool. John Stewart, who was treated for prostate cancer at Addenbrooke’s with the Tomotherapy equipment, headed up the swim team which included wife, Catherine, and daughters Esme, 9 and Jessica, 13. The athletic family swam 22 miles each in eight weeks of John’s treatment, completing the swim in November 2008.
Together with Mike Dearlove, Managing Director of EACS Ltd, John and Catherine presented the cheque to Dr Neil Burnet, Consultant Oncologist and Scott Richardson, Therapy Radiographer. EACS, who donated £507 to the Stewart’s challenge, deliver IT solutions to firms across East Anglia. Their donation was matched by John’s IT security firm, Signify, and the Stewart’s friends and family raised a remarkable £1,048.
John said: “We are so lucky in Cambridge to have one of only two Tomotherapy machines in the UK (and the first in the NHS). It made my treatment so much more bearable and allowed me to stay strong throughout, and the team at Addenbrooke’s were wonderful. I wanted to get fit for my treatment and combat the fatigue that can be a side-effect, and the swim challenge really helped me get through it.”
Yvonne Francis of Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust said: “We are very grateful to John and his family for their amazing fundraising efforts. The money raised will help the evaluation of the Tomotherapy technology, which is likely to influence practice, and therefore to benefit cancer patients, both nationally and internationally over the next decade.”
John also has a message for all men out there: “One message I have for all guys is to get yourselves checked. It’s worth it. The earlier you can treat prostate cancer, the better.”
