Cambridge Regional College celebrates 500th alumnus

Cambridge café owner Anthony Day has become the 500th member of Cambridge Regional College’s Alumni Association – a milestone mark for the new organisation.

The 30 year-old businessman, who runs two successful Caffe Sicilia coffee shops in the city, studied catering and hospitality at the college before going on to become one of the youngest hotel managers in the industry.

He launched his own award-winning business two years ago and is already helping current students at the college by mentoring and offering work experience.

“As an ex-student, it is a very special experience to be involved with the college again. Students are so important for the future of the industry and I’m very happy to help in any way I can,” he said.

Gemma Steele, a trainee chef at the college, has just started doing weekly work experience at the cafes, baking cakes and pastries.

“Gemma is the first student I’ve been able to offer work experience to and she is getting on very well. It is a great opportunity for her, and hopefully there will be many more,” he said.

“The Alumni Association is a great way to help re-connect past students with the college and benefits everyone. Going to CRC helped me develop my passion for the industry and I’m very happy to pass that on. I had such a good time there and the level of teaching was fantastic.”

CRC Deputy Principal Alan Jones, head of Teaching and Learning at the college, said: “We are delighted to welcome Anthony as the 500th member of our new Alumni Association. He is already passing on some of his skills and knowledge to our students and is enjoying the connection with his former college.

“The Association is a great way to keep former students in touch with each other and with CRC and we are looking forward to many more of our alumni joining the association.”
