Catherine completes first solo flight

The Cambridge Aero Club teaches numbers of young people to fly each year and their latest student to have flown solo is Catherine Stewart, who had gained an enthusiasm for flying having met Terry Holloway of Marshall of Cambridge on a radio chat show in Cambridge.

Catherine had been on the radio campaigning on behalf of Prostate Cancer awareness, having lost her husband John to cancer two years ago, and was looking for an outlet which would enable her to raise money, as well as having fun. She decided to take up flying lessons, setting herself the target of flying solo before her 50th Birthday.

Catherine, who lives in Girton, Cambridge said: “I have enjoyed flying training with the Cambridge Aero Club enormously and have gained enormous pleasure from the experience.  It was very exciting to fly my first solo on such a lovely day and I am really very grateful to the flying instructors, who have so patiently passed on their skills to me.  I now look forward to completing my Licence and buying my own aeroplane.”

Cambridge Aero Club Flying Instructor Anthony Cooke, who sent Catherine solo said: “I have enjoyed teaching Catherine to fly and have really enjoyed the good humour she has applied to her flying training.  It was a real pleasure to see the smile on her face when she landed from her first solo.”
