GCGP generates more for UK Government than Manchester: Centre for Cities

Urban policy research unit, Centre for Cities, has issued a new report entitled ‘Mapping Britain’s public finances’ which looks at where taxes are raised and public money is spent in local authorities across the country.

The Greater Cambridge Greater Peterborough LEP area has come out of the report strongly, as a net contributor to the UK economy, generating more money for the UK than many major cities.

Neil Darwin, Chief Executive of the LEP, commented:

“We have known for many years that Cambridge is a net contributor to UK PLC, and called upon Government to invest in areas of success that can deliver a real return on their investment. The LEP has already secured significant funding towards projects vital to the growth of our local economy, including the upgrading of the A14, the long awaited Ely Southern Bypass, and our soon to be launched business support service – Signpost 2 Grow. However, additional funding from Government is still needed for local infrastructure, skills, and business support across the Greater Cambridge Greater Peterborough area. This funding will not only reap rewards for our locality, but for the country as a whole.”
