It is easy to see how pundits and forecasters can be wrongfooted in an environment with glaring contradictions.  First, the huge losses in March were due to a viral pandemic that was out of control. The subsequent lockdowns that were imposed brought a measure of control on the viral transmission, but there was little clarity on how long they would last. Second, governments and central banks unleashed hitherto unthinkable levels of fiscal spending and monetary stimulus to help stabilise economies and provide liquidity to financial markets. The latter, where governments have essentially backstopped wages and cashflows for now, ended up being “enough” to underpin a powerful fillip in markets. Moreover, there is much better news on the viral front: lockdowns are slowly being eased in China, Europe and North America; there is development on both therapeutics (i.e. Remdesivir) and a vaccine (i.e. a number of trials are have progressed to wide-scale human testing); and we are far better prepared for a second-wave, should it come.

However, good investment processes should be built for the long-term and based on sound principles. Fahad Kamal will take us through this latest Kleinwort Hambros economic report and also explore responsible investment.  Responsible investing (the limitation of investment in adult entertainment, thermal coal, tobacco, gambling and controversial weapons) is perhaps the most significant movement in the investment industry for a generation.

About Fahad Kamal:  Fahad has led Kleinwort Hambros on developing and articulating its macroeconomic views and translating these views into actionable investment strategy. He chairs the Kleinwort Hambros Investment Committee and sits on the Societe Generale Private Bank Global Investment Committee.  He hosts The Wealth Chat podcast, where he dives into the world of wealth with brilliant speakers, discussing everything from responsible investment to tech, geopolitics to retirement planning.
