‘Youth’ (2017) is a drama that chronicles the lives of a group of young idealists in a military art troupe during the Chinese Cultural Revolution. They experience love and betrayal in the background of Mao-era songs and dances. The story follows two key characters, Feng Liu and Xiaoping He, from the Cultural Revolution through to 1970’s Sino-Vietnamese War. After their military service, they struggle to make ends meet in the Reform-era China and learn more of life’s lessons.

Directed by Feng Xiaogang and written by Geling Yan,‘Youth’ was the 6th highest-grossing domestic film of 2017 in China.

The film is in Mandarin with English subtitles. Running time 2h 16m (not rated).
