The world of electromagnetics can be described with Maxwell’s four equations. These equations form a language which scientist and engineers use to predict and investigate this phenomenon. This language is often taught through exercises with pen and paper, making it challenging to interpret and conceptualize the physical fields.

However, when this same mathematical language is included in numerical simulation tools, we can visualize the electromagnetic fields. This allow scientists and engineers not only to see the physical interactions between devices, but also to optimize their designs.

Artificial Intelligence, AI, is disrupting the traditional product development paradigms.  An increasing proportion of software is trained rather than explicitly programmed.  This approach is attractive because it can offer better results and shorter development times.  The trend is broader however, affecting hardware and system design as well.  For example, high-performance monolithic sensors are being replaced by multiple low-cost devices, in conjunction with data fusion and pattern recognition algorithms.  In this talk Rupert will look at some of the technologies involved, and how the new approaches place increased emphasis on data collection and model validation.

Angel Trains was created in 1994 as one of three rolling stock companies ("ROSCOs") in preparation for the privatisation of the rail industry.  It now leases nearly 4500 vehicles with a value of nearly £3.5Bn to 20 operating companies.  One of the companies working with  Angel Trains, Chiltern Railways, wanted to run hybrid diesel and battery-powered trains to improve reliability and shorten journey times on routes that may never be electrified because of rising costs.  Our speaker Euan Smith, will describe the engineering project to develop the hybrid trains and provide an overview of the deliverables and improvements that have been achieved.
