Dengue is present in more than 125 countries and WHO estimates that 50 – 100 million dengue infections occur worldwide every year.
Dengue, spread by the bite of an infected female mosquito (Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus) is caused by any one of four dengue virus serotypes and infection with one type does not provide immunity against another.
Dengue can present symptoms similar to the flu and only last a few days but, in its most severe form Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever (DHF) can cause bleeding and fatal circulatory failure. Although there is no specific treatment for Dengue, good hydration is essential and when in its most severe form hospitalisation and experienced medical care is essential.
Various trials are in progress but at the moment there are no vaccines available. It is important that all travellers use adequate bite prevention methods and are able to recognise the symptoms early to gain prompt treatment.
