Senior MEMS Technology Engineer

To develop MEMS technologies that will drive future growth of Xaar’s world class inkjet products. Technology development requires a combination of understanding customer needs, deep technical know-how, research, knowledge capture, innovation and sound engineering judgement. The specific area of focus for this role is our state-of-the-art thin-film Silicon MEMS technology used in the Xaar 5601. We need to raise our level of knowledge, understanding and capability to make the next big steps in this new and growing technology.

Key Accountabilities / expectations:

  • Contribution of senior level MEMS design expertise and innovation to develop the technology ready for the future product programmes.
  • Ensure that the technology has been investigated, prototyped, analysed and characterised to a level that is suitable for injection into a New Product Development (NPD) programme.
  • Ensure alignment of the technology with customer needs, product requirements and business objectives.
  • This includes the production of data to support proof of concept work and guidance on the specification, design, manufacturing process and validation methods for MEMS devices.
  • Support the delivery of the MEMS mask design and layout.
  • Close collaboration with
  • Process engineering on the MEMS fabrication processes.
  • Piezo material development and characterisation teams.
  • Fluid path expertise
  • Modelling & simulation team
  • Identify external resources and organisations that could benefit Xaar’s goals in thin-film MEMS technology.
  • Continue to develop own knowledge, expertise  and capabilities in the thin-film / MEMS field.

 

Key Relationships:

Technology team, actuator design team, external MEMS partners, technical leads / architects, programme and product managers.

Qualifications and experience:

Essential

  • Minimum of a masters degree in physics / chemistry / material science or other relevant discipline to MEMS design.
  • Architecture / design / development of complex systems involving thin-film MEMS devices.
  • Awareness of manufacturing methods for thin-film Silicon MEMS devices.
  • Experience of at least one complete product development cycle, from concept through full design, development and industrialisation to successful market introduction
  • Proven capability to design products to meet requrements and demonstrate commercial viability of candidate designs.

Desirable

  • PhD in relevant discipline
  • Detailed knowledge of Silicon MEMS actuator design and fabrication methods
  • Design of commercially successful piezo inkjet printheads.
