The Department of Physics is looking to recruit a Research Laboratory Technician for its new XPS Facility housed in the Maxwell Centre, West Cambridge.
This facility is open to internal and external researchers, as well as to industrial partners. The role holder will run and oversee the x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) suite in the Maxwell building.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the day to day management, training, booking, time keeping and maintenance of the facility. Tasks will include expert use of both machines, support for both and to oversee other user operations. You should be able to provide analysis and reports to clients if they wish. The role holder will engage with the lab manager and overall Royce programme manager and be the first point of contact for new users interested in the XPS facility. This will also include meetings with potential external industrial partners to explain and advertise the system. The role holder will carry out basic and preventative maintenance on both systems and will also be involved in further development of both systems to widen the range of instrumental capabilities.
You will be educated to degree level/ level 6 vocational qualifications or have an equivalent level of practical experience.
You must have practical experience with vacuum systems and ideally some material characterisation experience. Preference will be given to candidates who also have experience in managing a research facility.
The role-holder will co-manage an annual budget (£20K-50K) for maintenance, repair and expansion of the XPS suite.
Some weekend working/ out of hours may be required occasionally for emergency repair and maintenance.
Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a health assessment.
