Applications are invited for the Head of Design and Technical Services at the Department of Engineering. This role is responsible for managing the development and delivery of technical services to support research and teaching including mechanical and electrical/electronic design, in-house fabrication and outsourcing. These services are essential for a world-leading Department in which experiments, measurement, prototyping and the process of design and build itself are fundamental to its success. The service must perform to the highest technical standards and give value for money. It has to compete with external suppliers, compete with other institutions and match or exceed the capabilities of the Department's industrial sponsors. It has to function well at scale to serve approximately 180 Principal Investigators, 400 postdoctoral researchers, 900 graduate students and 1200 undergraduate students.

You will manage and provide technical leadership to the Senior Design Engineers, Central Technical Services Laboratory Managers, and the Laboratory Managers based in the academic divisions. In all you will be responsible for 97 members of staff.

The successful candidate will have previous experience of managing a workshop and associated technical services to support scientific/engineering research. You will have hands-on experience of designing, building and delivering one-off instruments, equipment and prototypes with high-quality skills and knowledge in project management, machining and assembly.

You will hold a first degree / Masters or a level 7 vocational qualification in a scientific discipline in engineering, science of other relevant discipline. You will have well-practiced skills in CAD/CAM e.g. Solidworks and PowerShape. You will be able to write technical/business cases for investment in staff, equipment and facilities, prepare project plans and manage delivery. You will also have the soft skills to motivate teams, coach and train team members, resolve disputes and communicate across a large organisation.
