Product Owner – Content Squad

ThoughtRiver is in an exciting period of growth and have offices and customers globally. As a scaling business we have a need for a Product Owner to lead one of our key Product Squads to help drive our priorities from a product development perspective.

ThoughtRiver is disrupting legal services by enabling lawyers to review contracts without reading them. Our artificial intelligence solutions automatically pre-screen contracts to improve productivity and enable automated triage and risk management capabilities. We are in an exciting period of growth and have offices and customers globally. As a scaling business we have a need for a Product Owner to lead one of our key Product Squads to help drive our priorities from a product development perspective.

The Content Squad owns our Lexible product (our ontology of legal questions), related applications used by our legal users to configure the platform. The Squad also oversees the predictive capabilities of our platform and helps build our out-of-the-box content for our customers.

 

The Role

The Product Owner owns the feature set within the remit of their Product Squad and is accountable for the Squad’s success. The Product Owner is responsible for the day-to-day operations of a Product Squad in order to deliver the Product Vision.The Product Owner can be thought of as the Managing Director for a Product Squad. The Squad being a cross-functional team assembled from different skills groups or Chapters including developers, computer scientists and lawyers. The Product Owner will work closely with Technical Leads within the Squad and seniorlawyers, with the Product Owner being responsible for business requirements, prioritisation and time-to-market. The Technical Lead being responsible for the technical design, estimates and delivery and lawyers responsible for the legal content.

Key Tasks

  • Leads product vision for the Squad in line with Product Management’s objectives.
  • Responsible for pitching features relevant to the Squad’s remit and representing the Squad’s interest in prioritisation and roadmap meetings
  • Responsible for defining size of Squad and skills required to meet the backlog
  • Responsible for product backlog definition using informed metrics and insight to help prioritise and judge success
  • Responsible for defining iterations and stories (or research projects) and ensuring these are appropriately prepared, reviewed and sized to ensure an effective sprint planning process
  • Responsible for selection of stories into iterations via sprint planning and assessment against the company’s core objectives to ensure effective prioritisation
  • Responsible for specifying requirements for other Squads as required and effective interaction with leads of other Squads to ensure this is done
  • Responsible for Sprint Reviews and Retrospectives to gather feedback and implement feedback / lessons learnt
  • Responsible for gathering and disseminating feedback on how effective the delivered features perform in production
  • Accountable for ensuring developments are production ready by driving and co-ordinating the activities of developers, QA and operations
  • Responsible for escalation of delivery issues to Product Management, including proposed courses of action
  • You will act as the key interface between a multi-faceted Squad, stakeholders and lead interactions with customers to ensure the Squad’s aims are achieved
  • The Product Owner will promote the adoption of ThoughtRiver behaviours within the Squad, will look for constant process improvement and provide feedback to line managers regarding other team members within the Squad.

Measures of Success

Product Owners are measured on the delivery output of the Squads they head up, by meeting release targets and go-to-market timelines that have been committed to, and by delivering products and features which receive positive user feedback as well as non-functional items such as high scalability, low error or bug rates and smooth transition of product into production.

The Candidate

You should have experience in product ownership/management and running an agile process to effectively balance competitive project priorities whilst deliveringfor customers. You will have an understanding of the full product lifecycle from analysis to development.Given the Content Squad’s technical remit, an empathy for legal concepts and machine learning background is advantageous. You will be highly logical, meticulous, ordered and rigorous in your approach. You take ownership and are able to provide clear direction on Squad activities and design direction and able to bring people along with you.  


You are adaptable, inquisitive and willing to learn new skills and approaches. You have a collaborative style and able to flex your communication style to engage effectively with lawyers and technologists to ensure you meet the company’s objectives.
