We’re looking for an ambitious Mechanical Design Engineer, with significant experience in the design and development of precision micro-mechanical or optical devices, to join our team and drive the development of next generation world leading all-optical switch technology.
Principal Mechanical Engineer
About the Role
HUBER+SUHNER Polatis designs and manufactures all-optical fibre-optic switches which make and maintain their optical connections by means of our patented DirectLight™ beam steering technology. Our products allow the efficient management of ever-increasing data volumes and are a key building block in the evolution towards software defined networks.
We are expanding our global technical team and developing our site in Cambridge to be the R&D Engineering Centre of Excellence for HUBER+SUHNER Polatis, focusing on new technologies as well as continuously improving our existing world-class designs. As Principal Mechanical Engineer, you’ll be at the forefront of our multi-disciplinary development team, exploring new design approaches and methodologies, developing innovative product solutions and acting as a key contributor to our product development framework and technology roadmap.
You’ll lead a small team of mechanical engineers and be responsible for the entire lifecycle of the product from conceptual design and analysis through to qualification and transfer to production. With your expertise in complex electro-mechanical design and multi-physics/FEA, you will not only take ownership of the mechanical design process but also be a strong advocate of it within the organisation.
This is a great opportunity for someone with highly developed technical skills and some experience of mentoring other engineers, to progress their career to the next level in a fast moving, growing company.
To be successful, you’ll need to have a degree in mechanical engineering or a related subject, plus experience of working at a senior level in a high-tech design / development environment. You’ll be a creative innovator with the ability to ‘think outside the box’ and a desire to find brilliant solutions to technical problems. Although you’ll ultimately be leading a small team, you’ll remain hands-on and focussed on delivery so you’ll need to be self-motivated as well as possess the drive to motivate others in order to achieve excellent results. Some experience of coaching or mentoring other engineers is essential as is the potential to successfully take on leadership of a team. However we will provide you with the necessary support for development so experience of managing a team is not essential.
You’ll also be an expert in 3D CAD and finite element analysis and be familiar with high reliability micro-fabrication techniques. You’ll be very comfortable working within a multi-disciplinary environment to solve highly complex technical problems. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, are essential. This includes the ability to present effectively on technical subjects to a technical and non-technical audience and to negotiate successfully with suppliers. Experience of PDM, and proficiency in precision opto-mechanical or electro-mechanical design, is highly desirable.
Based in a prime location on the Cambridge Science Park, HUBER+SUHNER Polatis is the world leader in the design and manufacture of energy-efficient, all-optical switching solutions that connect optical fibres directly to make networks more flexible, agile and reliable. We offer a range of optical switching solutions which are used in a number of different markets including cyber surveillance, government systems, telecommunications, data center networks and oil and gas instrumentation.
Founded in 2005 as a result of the merger of leading optical technology companies from Massachusetts and the UK, the company is now part of the HUBER+SUHNER group Fiber Optics Division.
