Opportunities for permanent roles in a range of business sectors

Firmware Engineer

The company:

Spotta is a VC backed, fast-growing startup in Cambridge, UK.  We are commercialising our proprietary AI and ultra-low-power IoT technology to solve the £320Bn problem of insect pests.

Our ambition is to be the world’s first smart pest systems company. We are at a really exciting intersection between AI, environmental sustainability, and IoT. Our scalable, platform technology enables huge increases in productivity in a whole range of sectors, including agriculture, forestry, textiles, and hospitality. We are building a substantial, highly profitable business and we’re going to massively reduce global insecticide use in the process.

Founded in 2018, we commercialised our first product in 2019 and are now generating revenue.  We have an ambitious strategy and product roadmap and we are looking to expand into our next key markets.

The product:

Spotta makes smart insect pest monitoring systems. By this we mean low-labour, continuous monitoring with insect identification and insightful analysis. This is enabled by our in-field monitoring devices which we call Pods. The Pods are always-on, IoT connected, use machine vision, and have a long service interval. Different insects and environments require different housings as well as PCB and firmware variants, but the core technology platform remains the same between products.

You’ll report to and work closely with the Firmware Lead to:

  • Design, build, test and maintain the firmware for Spotta’s Pods
  • Build tooling to support the above
  • Build and maintain tooling for manufacturing and assembly of Pods

Culture fit:

You’ll be joining a lean, fast moving team of software engineers, entomologists, mechanical engineers, and electronic engineers. As a fast moving startup, shifting deadlines and priorities are a reality and you must be able to adapt to them quickly. Spotta’s firmware is a key part of a wider technology solution and you need to be able to contribute intelligently in all aspects of firmware development. The firmware is performance critical and shipping broken builds has a very high cost to the business. As such, you must be diligent and methodical in your work and be able to keep code quality consistently high. Lastly, you must be an honest team player - we win and lose together.
