Reporting to our Director of Engineering, and working closely alongside other Heads of Mechanical Engineering, Electronics & Software Engineering and Quality Engineering in both a consultancy and technical role, this senior position takes responsibility for the following:

  • Line management and ongoing development of one of three mechanical engineering groups and aligning resources to company needs
  • Providing technical input into, and leadership of, medical device development from early concept stages through to manufacture, design verification, scale-up and launch
  • Development of new business in a product development consultancy, working with the commercial team and other disciplines within the organisation
  • Contributing to the development of Team’s systems and processes, across the engineering discipline and more broadly

In addition to carrying out core duties of the role, there will also be scope for technical contribution on a range of projects within Team, in a capacity of advisor, consultant or technical reviewer. The ability to engage and work effectively with consultants and colleagues across our business, and that of our client, is critical to success in this role.

Qualifications and Skills


  • Honours degree in Mechanical or Production Engineering or similar
  • Extensive track record of technical leadership of complex/large multidisciplinary device/system development projects
  • Overall portfolio of experience in either the leadership or hands-on design and development of medical devices and/or systems, spanning early stage to industrialisation, and across a wide variety of products and geographies
  • Application and understanding of the requirements of key industry standards including ISO 13485 and 14971


  • Project management skills and experience
  • Ability to represent mechanical engineering discipline in external audits from clients and QA assessors
  • Structured and methodical problem solving
  • CAD skills (Solidworks or Creo)
  • Line Management experience
  • Coaching and/or mentoring experience

Leadership/Consultancy Skills


  • Proven track record in leading, planning and developing engineering capability and offering
  • Development of new business in product development consulting, including significant success in the healthcare sector
  • Excellent leadership and communications skills
  • Has taken the role of trusted adviser to a number of key clients
  • Ability to liaise with colleagues, clients and sub-contractors at all levels
  • Building and maintaining strong client relationships
