Opportunities for permanent roles in a range of business sectors

NLP Software Engineer

Kvasir is an early-stage Knowledge Management company creating solutions for enterprises based on Kvasir’s unique AI search technology. Kvasir is a spin-out from Cambridge University and our founders are academics and researchers from Cambridge University’s Department of Computer Science & Technology (aka the Computer Lab). Kvasir’s technology has been proven through proof of concepts with large organisations and, having secured funding, we are looking to build the company and the team to fully commercialise the products and take us to the next level.

What You’ll Do

Our core technology is at the cutting edge of statistical text and natural language processing. Your role will be to make sure that we retain that advantage, staying abreast of the state of the art, both academic and industrial. You will be a core part of the Kvasir development team, researching new technologies from both industry and academia, implementing and extending the latest techniques to provide new capabilities for the core Kvasir knowledge engine. You will have the flexibility and autonomy to define and implement new solutions as required to keep Kvasir at the cutting edge of knowledge management, and the opportunity to help select and specify the tools, technologies, and processes we will use in future.

Of course, as part of a small dynamic team doing early-stage product development, flexibility is key and you may end up doing things that extend your comfort zone. Although some work has already been done to create the systems, tools, and processes for our solutions as part of the proof of concepts, this is a great opportunity to make your mark developing and surfacing new technologies in commercial products.

  • Relishes the chance to work in an early-stage fast-paced environment with all the opportunities that brings

  • Is happy to work with ambiguity, conceiving and evaluating multiple approaches to a challenge

  • Is flexible and willing to turn a hand to whatever is necessary to make the company a success

  • Enjoys working in a team, leading and supporting other engineers and product people to drive products forward

  • Constructively challenges the status quo – we know that great ideas can come from anywhere – and relishes rolling up their sleeves to get things done and prove their point

  • Can talk to customers as necessary to understand their wants and needs

Skills and Experiences

  • Masters or PhD degree in NLP, mathematics, or computer science

  • Experience developing and implementing AI, ML and NLP technologies

  • Comfortable reading research literature and experimentally evaluating cutting edge NLP algorithms

  • Comprehensive knowledge in applied computational linguistics, especially in-depth understanding of neural NLP theories and common NLP tasks, able to apply state-of-the-art techniques and models

  • Experience with at least two of the following concepts: recommendations, keyword-based search, semantic search, abnormality detection, text analysis, sentiment analysis, transformers for NLP, knowledge representation, knowledge graphs

  • At least two years experience in commercial or open-source software development

  • Experience working with and optimizing high-performance code

  • Experience with TensorFlow, PyTorch, Keras, or similar

  • Hands-on experience with NLP models and techniques such as Google BERT, DeepMind WaveNet, NER, sentiment analysis, Fairseq, Tensor2Tensor, fastText, etc.

  • Over five years experience in commercial or open-source software development
