Backend Engineer

Cyted is seeking an exceptional Backend Engineer to join our team. The Backend Engineer will support the development of new systems providing medical insights and managing diagnostic workflows. Technologies include unique new machine learning technology, highly robust and scalable online services and web applications. A main responsibility is working the software teams to build reliable software systems that will facilitate communication between AI components, external systems, internal, and external end-users. This includes but is not limited to building and testing backend services, designing APIs, and working in conjunction with other software and non-software teams. The Backend Engineer will be part of a team responsible for developing and maintaining our mission-critical diagnostics platform.


  • Building reusable code and libraries for future use
  • Designing and delivering new platform capabilities
  • Integrating our platform with 3rd party services to extend capabilities

  • Taking part in Agile and Continuous Improvement processes

Working pattern, location and salary:

The role is a full-time position with a standard 37.5 hour working week. The role holder may be required to work flexibly.

The Backend Engineer will be based at the Cyted’s Head Office, WeWork, 50-60 Station Road, Cambridge, CB1 2JH. The Backend Engineer may need to visit other company sites when and if required.

Job requirements

Qualifications and background:

  • Ideally a minimum of 2 years’ experience in a similar role


  • Experience building RESTful APIs using JVM languages (Kotlin)
  • Collaboration and version control using Git
  • Experience of modern CI/CD tools
  • Experience with AWS and Terraform (desirable)

Knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Relational database knowledge
  • Understanding of async messaging patterns, especially in AWS (SNS, SQS)
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical and troubleshooting skills
  • Self-starter capable of planning and shaping the architecture of our backend services, and interested in expanding your skills
  • Can work independently to move projects forward
  • Knowledge of Python, including experience in Python 3 (desirable)
  • Knowledge of Rust (desirable)
  • Knowledge of GraphQL (desirable)
  • Knowledge or experience working with medical services or products (desirable)
