Data Science & Curation Manager


The Data Science & Curation Manager will lead the ResearchFish Interfolio Data Services team and be responsible for maintaining and automating the harvesting, curation and quality of research impact data with the goal of improving and automating legacy processes. The post holder will also work closely with the client facing teams to ensure the best possible service and value to our clients. This individual will be able to identify trends in the data and construct ML / AI tools to automate curation. This role is particularly focused on one of the Interfolio products which is the Researchfish system although there will be collaboration and learning shared across the whole organisation and the multiple Interfolio products. This individual will be part of a broader data council leading to the advancement of additional data products. Researchfish is an online platform which enables researchers to easily and quickly report the outputs, outcomes and impacts of the research they do to their stakeholders.


The ideal candidate will have a thirst for knowledge and have the ability to spot patterns and problems in the database through their own analysis and understanding. The position of Data Science & Curation Manager is a position based out of the Cambridge (UK) office.*

Primary Responsibilities

  • In depth understanding of the data model for the Researchfish system, its broader data set, and available tools;

  • Ongoing identification of risks and opportunities for improvement and workload reduction; including identification, investigation, task modification, measurement, and documentation;

  • Understand how the researchfish data is used by customers; generate analyses, dashboards and establish best practice processes;

  • Manage our data procedures and processes; keeping them in line with our target metrics and KPIs;

  • Develop and maintain metrics and dashboards to track and measure our efficiencies;

  • Identify and document process challenge points and interface with engineering for solutions

  • Make use of existing ETL data tools and implement new software tooling in order to reduce manual operations and to ensure consistency and accuracy of data going forwards;

  • Manage data activities in a timely manner according to customer requirements ensuring internal metric goals are met.

  • Create, maintain and document data management processes for user data, client data and platform metadata;

  • Follow due process used to raise, work on, manage and track the resolution of issues discovered with the data or the Researchfish platform

  • Work with the Data Council, the Chief Analyst, other senior stakeholders across the business;

  • Provide supervision to the Junior Data Curator



  • Understanding of relational databases including intermediate level SQL

  • 4+ yrs SQL experience, preferably with MySQL/ MS SQL or similar

  • Proficiency in data extraction, manipulation and analysis

  • Excellent MS Excel skills

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Ability to self-manage and adapt to changing requirements

  • Bachelors or Masters degree in Data Analytics, Data Science or Big Data

  • An analytical mind and inclination for problem-solving with an ability to recognize challenges and develop solutions to solve technical problems

  • Proven ability to work cross functionally with product, engineering and services teams and build relationships with multiple stakeholders



  • Familiarity with the international scholarly data ecosystem (e.g. Crossref, ORCID, Datacite, PubMed, etc.)

  • 3+ yrs Python/Php/R experience (or equivalent)

  • Customer facing experience

  • ETL experience (Matillion, Informatica or similar)
