General Counsel (Seed Funds)

This is a part time role (0.4 FTE), and can be worked over two full days or four half days, with flexibility around the working pattern, and hybrid working available.

Cambridge Enterprise:

Sitting at the heart of Europe’s most successful technology cluster, Cambridge Enterprise is the commercialisation arm of the University of Cambridge. We support academic staff and students, and turn technology, expertise and innovation into a valuable and sustainable portfolio of companies, investments, licences and consultancies. 

The team:

The Seed Funds team manages a highly successful £40m early-stage technology fund and actively supports the development of technology start-ups from the University. Companies in our portfolio have gone on to raise over £2bn in follow on funding and our funds have achieved a return multiple of 2.5x.  

Cambridge Enterprise is now looking to expand its Seed Funds investment team with a newly created General Counsel role. This is a stimulating role dealing with diverse and fascinating new companies, their founders and other investors. Seed Funds offers a high-quality deal flow and a clear focus on the societal impact of the companies we invest in. 

The role:

The successful applicant will provide legal support and assistance to the Cambridge Enterprise Seed Funds investment team, advising on legal issues relating to day-to-day operational activities, including negotiation and execution of investments, exits and general legal matters. The General Counsel will also deal directly with portfolio companies and their legal advisors on related legal transactions, and work closely with the University’s Legal Services Office to ensure Seed Funds is acting within the scope of the University’s legal framework. 

Your skills: 

Our ideal candidate is a qualified UK lawyer with at least five years’ PQE in corporate transactions. They will have a proven track record of providing advice on spin-out and early-stage venture capital or angel investments, including financings and M&A. Experience in dealing with or within the technology sector and/or University sector, as well as in-house experience, would be beneficial.  

The ideal candidate will be dynamic and decisive, happy to balance multiple transactions concurrently, and have great people skills.
