Opportunities for permanent roles in a range of business sectors

Network Engineer

Are you a network engineer within a service provider environment looking for the next step? We are looking for applications for a design engineering role within Europe's leading collaboration on e-infrastructure and services for research and education. Our Network Engineering team conducts design engineering and testing for our lab, corporate, and production networks as well as a wide range of services running on top. This role is primarily design engineering-based, where competence is a given and creativity is what we seek. All fault-fix, security, and provisioning is handled chiefly by other teams.

The Role

The role takes designs from concept to delivery and evolution, touching all aspects of our technology footprint and requiring significant collaboration across the company and within our consortium community. You’ll enjoy ample resources and autonomy with which to deliver on substantial responsibilities. Planning and co-ordination skills are paramount. Joining us at this stage affords you huge opportunity to make your mark as we build out our next iteration of the backbone using ‘single source of truth’ network automation for infrastructure and services – just two of several major projects in play right now.

Our ideal candidate

You will be a proven network engineer with extensive experience within a service provider environment.  In addition, we are looking for someone who enjoys working in an open and collaborative manner. You will be a highly motivated self-starter who takes initiative and has the confidence to voice their technical opinions. Strong interpersonal communication skills are essential for this position as you will be required to deal directly with vendors, 3rd party suppliers, and end users. The role requires working closely with internal teams both technical and non-technical, including Software Engineering and Procurement.

Why work for GÉANT?

We offer a blazing-fast, cutting-edge network that connects scientists, researchers and academics across Europe and the world.

Thanks to our terabit network, 50 million researchers, scientists, academics and students can share record volumes of data unconstrained by location, solving some of mankind’s biggest challenges.

Work at GÉANT and you’ll be supporting critical research into sustainable energy, deep space, high-energy physics, earth observation, environmental disasters, medicine and more!

GÉANT operates a pan-European multi-100G network for research and education users over a combination of dark fibre (10,000km) and managed bandwidth. We are in the midst a four-year upgrade project to double the number of fibre routes that will triple the total length of fibre used by GÉANT.  In the next two years, we will be replacing our Juniper IP/MPLS estate with a new, yet to be determined platform.

We are increasing the level of automation used in type certification of code, configuration management and service deployment. This will be achieved using industry standard open-source tools such as Robot, Python, GIT, Ansible, Jenkins and Jinja2.

Benefits of working for GÉANT

You’ll receive excellent benefits at GÉANT – we offer a generous holiday allowance and a 5% end of year bonus as standard.  The other benefits you receive will depend on the country you are employed in, but these will include an appropriate pension scheme and medical insurance.

We also invest heavily in learning to help our people become the best at what they do – enrolling staff on instructor-led training courses as appropriate, giving paid study days on top, numerous subscriptions to technical libraries, and additional individual-led training courses, materials, and exam fees can be requested.

Please note that this role is based in Cambridge/Amsterdam and the successful candidate will be required to work from the Cambridge/Amsterdam office when Covid restrictions ease.  We will initially be transitioning with flexible home/remote working, and a reasonable commute to Cambridge/Amsterdam will be required.
