CDT is seeking a Patent Analyst to join our professional, and highly motivated Intellectual Property (IP) team. The IP team is responsible for developing and executing first-in-class IP strategies to protect CDT’s and its Japanese parent company, Sumitomo Chemical’s (SCC), technologies. The Patent Analyst will also work closely with SCC’s Corporate Venturing and Innovation Teams (CVI) who are responsible for identifying potential start-up companies for partnership opportunities. The role will involve developing, performing, and analysing comprehensive IP landscapes, and other types of IP searches. CDT and SCC’s businesses span a wide range of sectors such as reducing environmental impact, Information, Communications and Technology (ICT), healthcare, and food.
In addition to standard Patent Analyst work, the role will involve the development and execution of large IP projects such as patent portfolio re-evaluations, process improvements, for example, finding alternative cloud-based searching platforms to meet SCC’s evolving IT requirements, and guiding projects through our project stage gate process from an IP perspective.
You will have an excellent academic record and be educated to degree level in Chemistry or Biochemistry with an MSc in Intellectual Property, or alternatively hold an MSc or PhD in Chemistry or Biochemistry together with demonstrable experience in IP, ideally gained as an inventor or an IP professional. Experience in patent landscaping is essential and relevant work experience in patent analysis gained within an IP team would be preferred.
In addition, you should ideally have practical experience with a major patent related database and be able to perform efficient and accurate reiterations of search results that yield highly relevant data-sets and interpret the results for internal clients and IP colleagues. You will have a keen interest in becoming familiar with new technologies and be creative, organised, with an aptitude for thinking outside the box and synthesising data from multiple sources to make actionable business recommendations to internal clients. You will be self-motivated, with excellent team-working and interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate with technical, IP and business colleagues.
