Sphere Fluidics Limited is a rapidly growing Life Sciences company based in Cambridge, UK. The company is developing innovative engineering solutions and chemistries for use in novel microfluidic-based instruments for single cell characterization and selection. 

The R&D team is now looking to recruit a Principal Scientist, New Technologies. The successful candidate will work in a multi-disciplinary team on a range of exciting and leading-edge projects with external global companies and academic institutions.

Key duties include:

  • Contribute to the development and shaping of the Company R&D strategy.
  • Perform technical scouting for the company across all R&D areas and help encourage the Company’s technical excellence.
  • Identify, assess and propose appropriate actions and plans for new scientific areas or projects relevant to Company strategy.
  • Coordinate and perform evaluations on new technologies that are potentially useful to the Company.
  • Develop R&D collaborations in new technology development and new applications of the extension of the Company’s technology and business.
  • Prepare and submit relevant UK and international grant applications.
  • Manage and coordinate the execution of collaboration projects and grant projects, and monitor the progress.
  • Proactively and effectively interact and liaise with the R&D, Business Development and Sales & Marketing teams.
  • Help the development of a network of useful external scientific experts and Key Opinion Leaders.
  • Help assess and perform due diligence on competitive science, technology and intellectual property potentially useful to the Company.
  • Proactively recommend new relevant science areas and product ideas.
  • Source and assess new science or technologies of potential use to the Company.

Required qualifications, skills, and experience:

  • PhD degree in science or engineering and proven working experience in R&D environment are essential.
  • Experience in a similar New Technology role is essential.
  • Past experience in microfluidics or droplet microfluidics research is advantageous.
  • Past experience in cell biology, single cell analysis, cell line development, cell therapy or genome editing research is advantageous.
  • Past experience in biopharma and biotech research is advantageous.
  • Fluent in English.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications.
  • The ability to work within a set timeline and deliver tasks on time is essential.
  • The ability to work both independently and collaboratively is essential.
  • The ability to multitask and excellent attention to detail.
  • Effective team coordinator and team player.
  • Being comfortable in a fast-paced environment with a high degree of autonomy and accountability.
  • Great project management and organisation skills.

The successful candidate will work in a multi-disciplinary team and should be enthusiastic with excellent team-working and communication skills.
