Product Development Manager - Food Contact Materials

To investigate soluble and edible polymeric materials such as microcapsules, films, and coatings for food products to provide sufficient mechanical and barrier properties.

Xampla is based in Cambridge, UK and developed its expertise in supramolecular engineering of plant proteins to produce new materials with no synthetic content. Xampla has a strong pipeline of application projects across the areas of microplastic alternatives, coatings, and flexible packaging.

As a Product Development Manager your main activity will be to develop natural, soluble, or edible biopolymers to generate barrier shift on food products, either by coating or microencapsulation techniques to protect food grade sensitive ingredients (nutraceuticals). The job holder will have soul responsibility for the scale up of Xampla’s microencapsulation, coatings, and other food contact material application projects.

In the first instance the establishment of a robust conversion process, from lab to pilot scale, considering functional requirements and proper shelf-life stability for the established end user application.

  • Screening of different bio-based polymers dispersions and / or solution formulations to create food contact microcapsules, coatings, and films.
  • Develop materials which could be used as a barrier against grease, moisture and oxygen.
  • Assess the functional properties of microcapsules and coatings such as barrier performance, shelf life, water solubility, taste and visual impact.
  • Ensure food safety and compliance of the microcapsules and coatings formulations.
  • Utilisation of techniques for microencapsulation post treatment as spray drying.
  • Design and Develop prototype machinery to simulate the coating technology on different food and packaging applications.
  • Prepare reports on procedures tested and eliminate methods that are unsuccessful.
  • Responsible for validation testing of its development e.g. migration testing, shelf life and biodegradability testing among others.
  • Responsible for specification development of Xampla’s food contact materials portfolio.
  • Research patents, copyrights, and trademarks in food contact material applications.
