Reporting to the VP, Corporate Development, the Director, Corporate Development will take a critical role in complex transactions working with cross functional teams associated with those transactions from identification/evaluation through negotiation and completion. He/she will also be responsible for performing the detailed industrial, financial and transactional assessments of potential transformative external growth opportunities in therapy areas of core strategic interest to AstraZeneca. Further, the Director, Corporate Development will be responsible for performing, as required, a range of financial analysis typically prepared by Corporate Development to support the Group Finance’s activities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support cross-functional scientific and financial evaluations of transformative strategic opportunities across a breadth of therapy areas.

  • Provide solid transaction management expertise to help design, evaluate and implement innovative deal structures for the relevant transactions.

  • Work with leadership to ensure appropriate prioritisation and ranking of opportunities across the business.

  • Coordinate and gather actionable input from multifunctional teams for the evaluation and transaction execution of strategic opportunities. Teams will include senior scientific, technical and commercial representatives from R&D, Finance, Legal, IP, Operations, GMSO and Global Commercial Operations.

  • Work with the teams to ensure due diligence assessments identify and focus on key risks, and assist in the development of risk mitigation proposals.

  • Produce valuations and deal structure impact analysis using various valuation techniques, deal structures, assumptions and sensitivities

  • Prepare transaction opportunities for SET and Board discussions as required.

  • Assist in the deal negotiation and closure.

  • Work with transaction integration and alliance management team to ensure adequate arrangements are in place from closing.

  • Ensure thorough transaction post mortems are prepared and shared internally.

  • Prepare activity reports for senior management as appropriate.

  • Undertake ad hoc business development projects as they arise and business need require

  • Beyond assisting in the execution of live transactions, develop detailed assessments of potential external growth opportunities, including evaluation of product portfolios and pipelines, corporate and asset valuations, deal structure alternatives and their impact, transaction implementation and execution risks.

  • Produce, as required, financial simulations in support of Group Finance’s planning and reporting activities

Education, Qualifications and Essential Experience

Successful candidates will have the following skills and Experience:

  • 10+ years of experience within Corporate Finance, Mergers and Acquisitions. This can be through working in Competitive Intelligence, Investment Banking, Equity Research, Management Consulting or Investment Management.

  • At a minimum a BSc in subjects involving strong numeracy, such as Mathematics, Economics, Finance etc.

  • Proven strong numeracy and financial literacy. Expert knowledge of commercial and financial evaluation and business case preparation techniques.

  • Superior analytical and problem-solving skills, with proven ability to synthesise complex issues effectively.

  • Strong interpersonal and team leadership skills, demonstrating flexibility and a proven ability to deal with complexity under time pressure

  • Effective communicator to senior audiences, both in writing and orally

  • Transactional experience with a relevant track record

  • Ability to assess and contribute to executing innovative and complex transactions across therapy areas

  • Familiarity with transaction processes and a broad range of transaction structures and applicable legal principles

  • Experienced in working as part of international, multi-functional project teams of senior professionals including both internal and external advisers.

  • Credibility with third parties, including companies, institutions and stakeholders

Desirable Skills and Experience:

  • PhD. in Biology and Life Sciences, or advanced degree in Medical studies (e.g. MBChB), would be a strong advantage

  • Knowledge of pharmaceutical business and drug development process
