The role

Reporting to the Senior Director for External Manufacturing Procurement, the Associate Director of External Clinical Manufacturing Procurement will be accountable for the External Manufacturing category strategy, supporting Pharmaceutical Technology & Development (PT&D) and BioPharmaceutical Development (BPD).The category includes API/DS (active pharmaceutical ingredient/drug substance) and F&P (formulation & packaging) contract manufacturers supporting clinical production.

You will contribute to overall API and F&P Category Strategies, working closely with Therapy Area Leads and Global Category Managers in the External Manufacturing team. This position ensures leveraging of supplier relationships that cross into other Global Procurement categories and will manage priorities and resources for sourcing events supporting new product supply, and new molecules from existing supplier partners. It will be at the forefront of establishing external partners to support new technologies emerging in the AZ early pipeline, collaborating closely with business partners in PT&D and BPD.

This is a leadership role that provides overall management and leadership to a category family globally. It ensures that sourcing and procurement strategies are aligned to corporate strategy and feasible with existing and future suppliers.

What you'll do.


  • Accountable for designing, and implementation of category, region or market strategies to optimize business efficiency.

  • Accountable for category management globally including strategic sourcing, Supplier Collaboration & Innovation, contract and risk management.

  • Accountable for developing and maintaining expert knowledge of respective global supply markets, competitors and product innovations.

  • Work across Procurement in understanding the global spend and finding opportunities to increase quality and improve value for money. Facilitate implementation of procurement change initiatives within category to improve business performance.


  • Accountable for leading the team, resources, and category targets through direct reports. Manage overall portfolio and all direct reports performance globally.

  • Lead, coach and develop professional aspects of Procurement team members

  • Establishing and developing a team by attracting high calibre talent from within and outside the organization and providing appropriate opportunities and support

Business & Supplier Engagement:

  • Develop an extensive understanding of customer needs and the business environment. Build strong relationship with customers and ensure customer satisfaction.

  • Work with the Strategic Intelligence team to perform procurement reporting and analysis of management information to identify potential improvement opportunities as well as identification of innovative procurement solutions that provide cashable savings and process efficiencies for the organization.

  • Address Supplier issues to ensure the highest level of service delivery. Maintain contractual and business relationships with Suppliers to the highest standards.

  • Foster trusted relationships with vendors to achieve better pricing and quality of services

  • Conduct annual peer reviews of category, region or market strategies

  • Plan and review the performance of Procurement and other function teams within area of responsibility

  • Direct new initiatives and improvement programmes aimed at ensuring compliance, continuous improvement, technical excellence and improving cost-effectiveness

  • Lead, define and gain approval of business needs and the translation of these needs into specific resource requirements

  • Develop senior level relationships in order to resolve issues, optimise business performance and develop future improvement opportunities

  • Instil the highest standards of compliance and ethics consistently across AZ

Essential skills and experience

  • Degree level qualification or equivalent experience

  • Thorough knowledge of the pharmaceutical industry

  • Expertise in at least one area of Procurement and knowledge of several others

  • Proven leadership experience

  • Strong communication skills and ability to influence others

  • Comfort with risk and ambiguous situations

  • Experience with technology platforms with appropriate risk mitigation from a data privacy and cyber security perspective.
