Associate Director of Science Solutions

We have a new and exciting opportunity for an Associate Director of Science Solutions to establish and lead a new unit within the Wellcome Sanger Institute, with the mission of directly enabling and supporting our world-leading genomics science.

The new Science Solutions unit within ICT in the Wellcome Sanger Institute is targeted on directly empowering and accelerating our science. It will do this by co-creating new IT methods, platforms and tools with our scientists  IT/informatics teams across the institute.It will provide a ‘power-assist’ for our Scientific Programmes, in a world where IT and informatics are critical to our science, covering exciting areas such as gene editing and new imaging techniques.

About the role:

Reporting directly to our CIO, you will work closely with Scientific Programme leads, Heads of Informatics, and Scientific Operations stakeholders to develop new and innovative IT/informatics solutions to keep our science at the leading edge.

The new unit will closely partner our Scientific Programmes and our Scientific Operations. It will work with them to exploit new opportunities and overcome barriers to the science.This includes horizon scanning new technologies, advanced high-performance algorithms, cloud solutions, and developing our platforms and tools which are already used across the globe.

You will oversee the successful transition of new solutions and capabilities into ongoing operation.

You will have explicit responsibilities of further developing our data management and informatics strategies, and establishing and leading an Informatics Community of Practice across our campus.

Given the ever increasing dependence of genomics on IT, data and informatics, this role is vital to the onward
success of the Wellcome Sanger Institute and its science.

Essential Skills

  • Experience of leading on advanced IT/technology solutions for genomics or similar scientific discipline
  • Experience of IT/informatics and data in a research environment
  • Experience of developing and delivering an informatics strategy
  •  Experience of developing and delivering a data management strategy
  • Experience of leading a community of practice or similar practitioner support organisation
  • Experience of horizon-scanning and developing R&D futures
  • Able to manage a complex portfolio of work, with conflicting priorities and resource demands
  • Familiarity with agile delivery principles.
