Do you want to play a leading role in commercialising the ideas of world-class academic researchers? This is a full-time role. Flexibility around hours and working pattern will be considered. Background: Sitting at the heart of Europe’s most successful technology cluster, Cambridge Enterprise is part of the University of Cambridge, and supports academics, researchers, staff and students in achieving knowledge transfer and research impact. We do this by helping innovators, experts and entrepreneurs use commercial avenues to develop their ideas and expertise for the benefit of society, the economy, themselves and the University. The role:

The Business Development Manager will identify and develop new commercial leads for the ideas, technologies and inventions that we are working with, towards the ultimate goal of growing our portfolio of licences to and/or collaborations and partnerships with third party companies.

You will find new, creative and successful ways of reaching new potential partners, and generate new strong prospects for licenses and/ or long-lasting industrial collaborations and partnerships for a range of technologies.

This role will offer you a fantastic insight into world-class research, and the breadth of scientific diversity will be stimulating and engaging . You will be working with cutting edge technologies and will be able to help these discoveries make a difference in the world.

This is a new role, so there will be plenty of scope for helping to shape this service, with the support and working closely with colleagues in the Technology Transfer team who help researchers at the University of Cambridge to develop their ideas, technologies and inventions into commercial opportunities.

Your skills:

Your background is in the physical sciences, which might be demonstrated with a PhD.  We work with many different complex ideas and technologies – most of which are in very early stages of development.  As such, you will have the ability to grasp and understand different scientific concepts and communicate the same both in accessible language and with a degree of expertise to unlock interest in prospects for further consideration and development.

You will have proven working experience as a business development manager, or a similar relevant role in a technology-based market, with a strong track record of relationship building.   We are looking for someone who builds long-lasting strategic relationships, rather than transactional ones.

Our ideal candidate has significant experience in a range of competencies including marketing of new and early-stage technologies, development of industry-academia strategic partnerships, negotiation, commercialisation and licensing strategies, project management, engagement with commercial partners/customers. Indeed, ideally you have worked in a similar role and have a good understanding of research (both academic and in industry) as well as innovation processes.

You will have a good understanding of HEIs, research (both academic and in industry) as well as innovation processes.  You will also need good knowledge and understanding of funders of innovation and enterprise such as Innovate UK.

Proficiency in MS Office, CRM software (e.g. Dynamics 365) and sales engagement platforms is also required.
