Collections Assistant - Stores Move (Fixed Term)

The University of Cambridge is one of the world's oldest universities and leading academic centres. If you're looking for a new challenge and would like excellent benefits, extensive learning opportunities and a stimulating working environment in return for your skills and contribution, there could be a job here for you.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 31 December 2024 in the first instance.

Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a basic disclosure (criminal records) check, a health assessment and a security check.

The Museum of Archaeology & Anthropology (MAA) is hiring a full-time Collections Assistant to work on an ambitious and challenging project to inventory, assess, photograph, pack and move over 300,000 artefacts from across the world to a new collections facility in Cambridge. The project, which began in 2020, is now in its final year, predominately working with archaeological collections from Europe and the Americas.

This is a rare opportunity for a professional at an early stage in their career to gain experience in collections care and extensive knowledge related to the collections. Training will be provided on conservation and hazard assessment, artefact documentation, packing and photography. Our goal is to ensure that the collections are both appropriately stored and made physically and intellectually accessible: to researchers, students, stakeholders and audiences in Cambridge and worldwide, through visits to the new store and online through MAA's catalogue.

You will have an interest in museums and collections, with an appreciation of issues of cultural sensitivities related to artefacts in museums like MAA, good oral and written communication skills and excellent attention to detail. You will have demonstrable IT proficiency, manual dexterity for object handling and the ability to work with colleagues and external contacts with sensitivity and discretion.

This is a full-time post until 31st December 2024. Given the time-sensitive nature of the project, we are seeking applicants who can start as soon as possible. Early availability will be taken into consideration in selection.

The closing date for applications is Friday 23 February 2024 with interviews taking place on Friday 8 March 2024.

Further information regarding the position is available within the Further Particulars (link below).
