Description of role: TWI are seeking to appoint an experienced Level 3 NDT Consultant to support the “NDT Inspection Services” Section of the “Non-Destructive testing” (NDT) Group. This work will include in-house and customer consultancy support, authoring and review of Level 3 documentation, support to invigilation, audit, expert witness and standard committees, business development, mentoring and delivery of state-of-the art advanced NDT projects. The Level 3 NDT Consultant will have a minimum of three CSWIP/PCN Level 3 qualifications in NDT, an appropriate qualification at degree level or significant demonstrable experience in the on-site application of NDT in industry, extensive knowledge in NDT and will have gained or be working towards chartered engineer status. The NIS section delivers a broad range of projects to an international customer base often with competing demands and the requirement to co-ordinate multiple priorities in a fast paced, continually changing environment. As an NDT Level 3 Consultant in our team, you will propose, manage and delivery projects for our customers, as well as supporting day-to-day customer enquiries. To be successful you will need to: Develop expertise and innovations aligned to Industrial Member need in order to differentiate TWI from competitors, often being asked to solve NDT enquiries related to inspection of challenging materials, complex geometries or within hazardous environments; Commit to providing technical excellence with effective communication and interpersonal skills, Demonstrate a strong track record for effective Project Management, scoping of work and authoring of technical reports to a high standard; Work with peers on your own initiative and act as a mentor to develop less experienced TWI technologists; Maintain projects to a high level of safety, quality and technical excellence while ensuring time, cost and delivery targets are met; Proactively develop a pipeline of new business, engaging with potential customers, colleagues in other business units and the business development function. Remain flexible to the needs of the business, supporting the team to deliver project work in times of high demand whether this is a desk based, laboratory or on-site requirement. Key accountabilities

  • Coaching and mentoring of technical staff to aid understanding and solving of technical problems.
  • Understanding technical requirements of customers, accurately budgeting both time and cost required and ensuring timely delivery of outcomes.
  • Produce clear, accurate and high quality written proposals, technical reports and documentation without supervision.
  • To aid development of industrial membership for TWI and support business development requirements within the team
  • Support senior management with day to day business operations
  • Lead role in development and coordination of the Group technology strategy, engaging with staff and senior management to ensure business alignments and group buy-in and understanding.
  • To advise section manager and colleagues on technical advances and opportunities for investment with the technical area.

Qualifications

  • Degree in relevant science/engineering discipline.
  • Minimum of three qualifications to CSWIP/PCN Level 3 in NDT.
  • A PhD in relevant science or engineering discipline.
  • You will preferably be working towards, or hold, Incorporated or Chartered status linked to membership of a relevant professional institute.
  • Project management or leadership qualifications.

Skills

  • Business awareness with a sound technical capability.
  • Competency in planning and delivery for research and client based projects.
  • Excellent written and verbal English communication skills within a business environment.
  • Good client interaction skills preferably in an industrial field.
  • The ability to prioritise competing demands.

Specific relevant experience

  • Sound technical background in NDE technologies.  
  • Typically at least 10 years of relevant NDT experience with knowledge of an industrial sector.
  • Experience of managing complex technology development or deployment projects.
  • Experience of preparing proposals and managing large, multidisciplinary projects, such as Joint Industry projects. 
  • Experience of leading the co-ordination of business activities.
