GODMANCHESTER

CDT has a mission to identify novel materials and demonstrate their potential to create new business opportunities aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and our parent company’s, Sumitomo Chemical, goal to develop products that benefit society as a whole as well as the business. There is an opportunity for a Scientist to join our research team to make an important contribution to our development of these innovative materials.

Sumitomo Chemical is committed to sustainable development and is uniquely positioned as a chemical company to implement the changes required to combat climate change.  It is targeting a 50% reduction in Green House Gas (GHG) emissions by 2030 and net zero emissions by 2050, following the Science Based Targets initiative.  As such, it is a recipient of the EcoVadis Gold Award and is named on the Carbon Disclosure Project’s (CDP) ‘A’ list for Climate and Water Security.

This role is within the Analytical team where you will collaborate with CDT’s multi-disciplinary technical teams to progress projects through the characterisation of novel materials and provision of high-quality analysis and interpretation to understand how purity and physical properties correlate to performance in applications.

We thrive on collaboration and discussion between teams to identify solutions to problems and progress our work along innovative avenues and encourage our teams to identify and promote their own ideas and proposals to solve our scientific challenges. You will have an inquiring mind, with an ability and desire to solve problems and learn new skills, and an interest in the link between material properties and their performance in applications. You will be qualified to PhD level in chemistry, materials science, chemical analysis, or a related subject, or alternatively hold a chemistry degree with equivalent relevant work experience.   In addition, you will ideally have work experience gained in a material science or analytical role gained within either and industrial or academic environment. Your expertise will be in the characterisation of materials and identification of impurities by liquid chromatographic techniques, including LC-MS and HPLC, coupled with the detailed interpretation of analytical chemistry results and data to draw clear conclusions and recommendations. Experience of other analytical techniques would be advantageous.

We have an agile, dynamic work environment, offering outstanding opportunities for learning and development working as part of a vibrant and diverse team. We offer a competitive salary, together with a generous sign-on bonus.  Our benefits package includes 27 days holiday, plus UK bank holidays - we even give you an additional day off work to celebrate your birthday!  In addition, as part of our commitment to corporate social responsibility, we have a policy that enables our employees to take paid time off work to undertake voluntary and charity support work.  We also offer a flexible working approach, including flexi-time and homeworking.  On top of this, we offer private health and dental insurance, life assurance, income protection insurance, an Employee Assistance Programme and pension scheme.
