The Role

 

As a Scientist at Illumina in Consumables and Assay Development you will work in a dynamic, team-oriented environment and help create genomic analysis tools used in the leading edge of research. You will work with multi-disciplinary teams to create cutting edge and robust new products and assays for the next generation sequencing platforms offered by Illumina. You will participate in the development of new DNA sequencing platforms by optimizing the biophysical and biochemical assays Illumina uses to analyze and track the progress of our chemistry through the sequencer.

 

Responsibilities Will Include

 

  • Develop new products in fast-paced product development environment through cross-functional collaboration with multidisciplinary teams
  • Identify, evaluate, plan, prioritize, and optimize research ideas leading to new robust assays and chemistries for next generation sequencing platforms
  • Plan and execute experimental designs and various laboratory activities with minimal instruction
  • Develop and optimize analytical methods to characterize new and existing reagents, enzymes, and processes
  • Evaluate and transfer new analytical/biophysical tools and techniques
  • Optimize reagents and processes to achieve commercial levels of stability, robustness, and performance
  • Identify new opportunities for innovative products using the company’s core technologies
  • Be both a strong individual contributor as well as a collaborative team member
  • Conduct clear and concise communication with colleagues and supervisors in multi-functional group settings through oral updates, written reports, and technical meetings

Required Skills and Experience

  • PhD in biochemistry, biochemical engineering, chemical biology or related field
  • some industrial experience in a scientific discipline or engineering is preferred, which may include post-doctoral work
  • Sound understanding of the latest genomics technologies, methodologies, and practices
  • Strong data analysis skills, ability to interpret, draw conclusions, and drive decisions from complex data sets
  • Detail oriented with excellent experimental skills and laboratory practices
  • Good troubleshooting skills and strong ability to lead investigation and resolution of technical problems, and identify risks
  • Hands-on experience with various analytical/biophysical techniques used for characterization of biomolecules, small molecules, and formulated reagents
  • Ability to quickly learn new systems/methods/techniques and then train others

 

Preferred Background Skills and Experience

 

  • Understanding of next-generation sequencing technology
  • Experience with and knowledge of transition metals and redox chemistry
  • Experience of working with molecular biology reagents (particularly dNTP) an advantage
  • Experience working with and developing dried formulations
  • Experienced with Design of Experiment (DOE) methodologies (i.e., JMP, Design Expert, etc.)
  • Product development experience, including assay optimization, reagent development, integration and testing, transfer to production and documentation
  • Experience with Critical Parameter Management or Design for Six Sigma Methodology is desired
