As part of the Medical Genomics Research group, you will work with collaborators and customers on the clinical adoption and implementation of illumina’s analysis and interpretation software. The role
We are seeking an experienced Senior Bioinformatics Scientist who ideally comes from a Science background with strong coding experience, and an appetite for Research that is applied to the industry. You will analyse clinical samples from external collaborations, to define best practices and participate in developing innovative methods that transform sequencing results into discoveries and clinical insights that may improve patient care.
Responsibilities will include:
- Become an expert user. Use your bioinformatics skills to support Illumina’s analysis and interpretation software on collaborations in the UK and Europe. Use critical thinking to solve a wide range of problems.
- Build the next big thing. Work in cross-functional teams across Illumina to convert customer requests into detailed requirements; work with software engineering teams on their implementation and release. Prototype novel solutions.
- Communicate. Externally to understand what the collaborator needs, show what can be done and manage expectations for what can’t. Internally to bridge between bioinformatics and software development
- Developing and improving prototypes for clinical reports and biomarker detection
- Identifying opportunities to improve the bioinformatics user experience and implement solutions
Preferred background, skills, and experience:
- Good working knowledge of bioinformatics and python, comfortable with shell scripting and HPC, familiarity with git
- Understanding of software development process, writing requirements, change management
- Scientific thinking, problem-solving, ability to learn on the job
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work effectively both individually and as a part of a team
- Experience with Illumina’s software and sequencing data would be an advantage
- Background in oncology, rare disease, or experience analysing clinical samples would be an advantage
- Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Biostatistics, Computer Science, Genetics, Genomics, Biotechnology or M.Sc. with equivalent experience
