To achieve our bold ambition, we have an open position for a Senior Scientist in Process Modelling and Simulation.

What you’ll do

In this role you will be part of a team providing process modelling and simulation expertise to process development and optimisation projects. Through this, you will contribute to establishing a strong modelling and predictive culture in our growing Chemical Development. You will work across skillset areas (eg. Process engineering, chemistry, computational chemistry, crystallisation and digital scientists).

Your role will feed into the development projects and work closely with the project technical teams, to apply digital approaches to the process design and optimisation resulting in robust and sustainable chemical processes to manufacture APIs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate seamlessly with chemists, chemical engineers, analytical chemists, and crystallisation experts to integrate modelling with experimental data and optimise API manufacturing processes, leading to enhanced efficiency and output.

  • Utilise cutting-edge Machine Learning techniques to analyse complex data sets, extract hidden patterns, and develop predictive models for API manufacturing processes, enabling informed decision-making and process optimisation.

  • Leverage Bayesian Optimisation algorithms to design experiments effectively, identify optimal conditions, and accelerate the process of developing novel APIs, reducing development time and costs.

  • Harness modern programming languages and libraries, including Python, Pyomo, Julia, TensorFlow, and PyTorch, to build efficient Machine Learning code, ensuring the development of robust and scalable predictive models.

  • Design, develop, and implement process models and simulations using advanced modelling software, such as Aspen Plus, HYSYS, and gPROMS, providing a comprehensive understanding of API manufacturing processes and their potential for improvement.

  • Develop innovative optimisation techniques to streamline workflow integration, knowledge transfer, and technology adoption, accelerating drug discovery and development processes from high-throughput screening (HTS) to process optimisation.

  • Prepare and present high-quality technical reports, presentations, and scientific papers to communicate findings and contribute to the advancement of API development methodologies, fostering scientific collaboration and knowledge sharing.

  • Champion digital transformation and innovation within Chemical Development

Essential for the role

  • You have a degree or PhD in a relevant area such as, chemical engineering or similar.

  • You need a strong understanding of engineering principles of unit operations in chemical processes (e.g. mixing, distillation, liquid-liquid extraction, isolation and drying), and have experience of in-silico modelling of such operations.

  • You are used to working and collaborating with colleagues with different skillsets.

Preferred Requirements

  • PhD in Chemical Engineering or equivalent

  • Experience in process modelling, simulation, and optimisation in the pharmaceutical or chemical industry, demonstrating hands-on experience in applying these techniques to real-world problems.

  • Expert proficiency in Bayesian Optimisation, Process Systems Modelling, and Machine Learning techniques, enabling the development of innovative solutions for API manufacturing optimisation.

  • Experience with Aspen Plus, HYSYS, and gPROMS software is highly desirable, providing proficiency in advanced modelling tools for process understanding and optimisation.

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, both written and verbal, ensuring effective communication of research findings and technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, contributing to a collaborative and supportive work environment.
