The Emergency Services are made up of really great people, full of community spirit and always ready for a challenge! The firefighters at Cambridge International Airport are no exception to this rule and - to raise money for charity - a team of six firefighters kayaked across The Wash.
Cambridge Airport firefighters tackle The Wash
Tony Garner, Liam Wood, Matthew Lee, Rebecca White, David Birks and Richard Baker kayaked across the Wash, accompanied by Gary Morgan and Andy Coleman, providing support from a jet ski. Charities that benefited from their efforts were the RNLI, the East Anglian Children’s Hospice and the East Anglian Air Ambulance.
The firefighters were sponsored by ‘Hunstanton Kayaks’, who provided the kayaks and training, which also included all the safety advice and navigation training. Around 50 local people came along and cheered the kayakers home on their last leg back to Hunstanton.
Tony Garner of Cambridge International Airport said, “The challenge was very hard and we all needed to be physically fit to finish it. The wind and cross current made things very hard through the middle stages and we all knew this was a challenge that would test the very best of people.”
Lee Collinson from Hunstanton Kayaks said: “It was a great end to a very challenging trip. The weather was very windy with a force 5-6 (approx 27mph) from the south which meant the kayakers had a head wind for most of the trip. We very much enjoyed supporting the Cambridge International Airport firefighters and were delighted they raised so much money for charity.”
The kayak team is being entered into the Guinness Book of Records for becoming the first team to cross this treacherous stretch of water in a two-man ‘sit on top’ kayak.
