CUH in the top 15 for low mortality rates

28-01-2015

CUH is one of only 15 NHS Trusts in England which has lower than average death rates, according to an independent body.

The report from the Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC) looks at high or low mortality ratios across hospital Trusts from July 2013 to July 2014.

The data, based on the Summary Hospital-level Mortality Indicator (SHMI), compares the actual number of patients to die following hospitalisation at a Trust with the number that would be expected to die given the characteristics of the patients treated there. It considers deaths taking place during a stay at a Trust and also within 30 days of discharge.

CUH is one of only 15 Trusts out of 137 that had a 'lower than expected' SHMI. Last year CUH was in the same category for the same period.

Dr Jag Ahluwalia, medical director at Cambridge University Hospitals, said: “This report shows that more of our patients are surviving than would be expected and that CUH has one of the best records in the country. It is a testament to the safe, kind and excellent care that our staff provide to the hundreds of thousands of patients we treat each year.”
