Cambridge business leader, Richard Green of Ubisense Trading Limited, was last night named Ernst & Young ‘UK Science & Technology Entrepreneur Of The Year’ in London last night.

Sponsored by Credit Suisse and hosted by Fiona Bruce, the awards ceremony was held at The Park Lane Hilton Hotel. Other UK winners included Moonpig.com and Divine Chocolate.

Ayman Asfari, Group Chief Executive, of oil and gas company Petrofac Limited, was named Ernst & Young ‘UK Overall Entrepreneur Of The Year’ and will now go on to compete globally with more than 50 other country winners at Ernst & Young World Entrepreneur Of The Year awards in Monte Carlo in June 2011.

“A serial entrepreneur and real business leader”

Ubisense provides real-time location systems, tracking people or assets within a geospatial area of any magnitude. Richard initially trained as a mechanical engineer, his interest in 3D computer graphics led him to the Cambridge CAD cluster, where he founded Smallworld with eight partners.

Having established Smallworld as the number one geographic information system serving utility and telecoms companies in Europe and the US, the company was listed on NASDAQ in 1998 and sold to GE in 2000 for US$214mn. Richard co-founded Ubisense in 2002, the company now has more than 500 customers in over 25 countries and employs almost 100 staff globally.

Cathy Taylor, Cambridge senior partner at Ernst & Young, said: “The judges described Richard as an individual who impressed as a serial entrepreneur and real business leader, and a great ambassador for the company’s technology. He has clear leadership qualities and sound judgement that have helped him turn this highly innovative technological solution into a profitable business.

“I would like to congratulate Richard and his team for winning this award – it is a great achievement against such strong competition and a triumph for the Cambridge business community.”

As the first and only truly global award of its kind, Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year celebrates those who are building and leading successful, growing and dynamic businesses, recognising them through regional, national and global awards programs in more than 135 cities in 50 countries.
