Women involved in Science, Engineering and Technology (SET) enterprise in the East of England will be broadcast across the Internet as SETWomen launches the first in a series of nine podcasts.
Women in science, engineering and technology in the East of England speak out
The podcasts will be available from the SETWomen website, www.setwomen.co.uk, and will be broadcast every two weeks.
Nearly 40 women were involved in the creation of the podcast series, which focuses on the work and research of women in SET and the issues which affect them. The series has been designed to help raise awareness and provide recognition for women in SET. It aims to motivate SET women returners and encourage women to consider a career in Science, Engineering and Technology.
The series includes discussions with women in each of these specialist sectors, the transition from employment to enterprise, women innovators in academia and industry, why women choose SET entrepreneurship and more.
The podcasts have been sponsored by the East of England Development Agency (EEDA) and YTKO, a business consultancy specialising in the commercialisation of innovation in science and technology.
YTKO has a long history of supporting women in science and technology, a recent demonstration being the Bioscience Yorkshire Enterprise Fellowships. This programme offered post-doctoral researchers start-up advice and financial support to enable them to set up bioscience businesses.
A third of the “Fellows” recruited were women, while more than half of the resulting businesses started to date being led by women. The success of women in the program enforces the message that science and technology can be satisfying careers for women, when given the right support. Erika Watson, Chief Executive of Prowess, commented “The achievements of YTKO’s BYEF programme for women in SET are quite simply exceptional.”
YTKO is also the lead partner on the Enterprising Women initiative, which is providing integrated online and face to face training, networking, and business support for women across the East of England. This community has already grown to over 1700 women in less than a year.
