Innovative, state of the art energy efficient homes at the University of Nottingham's School of the Built Environment, deploy Ubisense Precise Real-Time Location System to accurately monitor individual occupant's carbon footprints.

Nottingham and Cambridge - 28th November 2008 - The project is a showcase of innovative state-of-the-art energy efficient homes of the future. Six homes constructed on the University Park, Nottingham have been designed and constructed to various degrees of innovation and flexibility to allow the testing of different aspects of modern methods of construction (mmc) including layout and form, cladding materials, roof structures, foundations, glazing materials, thermal performance, building services systems, sustainable / renewable energy technologies, lighting systems, acoustics and water supply.

The project aims to stimulate sustainable design ideas and promote new ways of providing affordable, environmentally sustainable housing that are innovative in their design. Several companies including: Roger Bullivant Ltd, E.ON, BASF, and Tarmac have funded the project.

"We are trying to establish energy and occupancy use patterns for the family in the home. We want to accurately see the impact of our energy reduction interventions on their life. The Ubisense RTLS allows us to get this data to an accuracy that has never been done before - this will be the first POE study that should allow us to get the individual carbon footprints of the occupants - we'll know who is doing what and using what as all energy and appliances are also monitored through the house BMS system." Says Dr Mark Gillot, Project Lead and Associate Professor in the School of Built Environment.

"The potential for using precise location for not only monitoring energy consumption but also in optimising its usage is enormous, I commend Mark and his team".
