ViewRanger gets airborne on Incredible Solar Electric Flight
ViewRanger, the award-winning off-road sat nav application for mobile phones, will be guiding the intrepid paramotor pilots of the Incredible Solar Electric Flight when they take to the skies on Thursday 23rd July 2009. The 8 pilots will travel from Monaco to Morocco in aid of the charity Ataxia UK, using four 'green' paramotors - three running on bioethanol and a fourth powered by solar-charged batteries. This will be the world's first inter-continental crossing by an electric paramotor.
ViewRanger has many unique features which make it perfect for outdoor activities - including flying! The pilots can plot and follow routes, locate their landing sites and compare their progress with one another. ViewRanger's unique 'Buddy Beacon' feature will enable the pilots and ground crew to see the positions of the rest of the team, displayed in real-time on a moving map display, even when visual contact is broken.
The journey will cover over 2000km and the pilots aim to fly 150km per day, weather permitting, so the entire journey will take around two weeks.
Damian Cardozo, founder of The Incredible Website - the organisation behind the Solar Electric Flight, and one of the pilots, said, "We hope to raise a large amount of money for Ataxia UK by making this 'incredible' journey. This will be a world first for solar power."
"We're proud that the guys have chosen ViewRanger as part of this terrific fundraising adventure," comments Craig Wareham of Augmentra, the company behind the software. "Our mobile tracking and navigation software will keep them on the right route and help them raise their target for Ataxia UK. By integrating mobile tracking into the website I hope that people at home will be inspired to follow them, and to donate towards this very worthy cause.
"ViewRanger is a perfect solution for the paramotor pilots. It runs on GPS-enabled phones which are lightweight and robust, so weight is kept to a minimum with no compromise on functionality. The processors are fast and reliable so the screen refresh rate is much quicker than on a standalone navigation device, and touchscreens make control easy. The new phones have massive memory capabilities so storing all the maps required for the trip - which flies over several countries - will be no problem."
Supporters wanting to follow the team's progress from the Riviera to North Africa will be able to watch the pilots' Buddy Beacons on the ViewRanger website at http://www.viewranger.com/electricflight. The online tracking facility will display position, speed, heading and altitude for each of the paramotor pilots. Those wishing to get out and follow the team as they fly down the Mediterranean coast can download ViewRanger to their phones from www.viewranger.com. Prices start from just ?20.
The award-winning ViewRanger software is fast becoming a 'must have' item for outdoor enthusiasts across Europe. Detailed topographic maps, sourced from national mapping agencies, can be downloaded in ViewRanger for a growing number of countries including Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, The Netherlands, parts of Italy, Norway, Holland, Ireland, Slovenia, Switzerland and the USA.
