Data compiled and verified by RWS inovia shows that Marks & Clerk offices around Europe filed 627 international Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) applications with a priority date between 1 July 2013 and 30 June 2014. These applications are due to enter the national phase during 2016.

Similarly, the eight UK offices of Marks & Clerk filed 419 PCT applications due to enter the national phase this year, over 170 more than the next most active PCT filer in the UK. Globally, Marks & Clerk ranked 14th.

Kirsteen Gordon, Managing Partner of Marks & Clerk’s Cambridge office, commented: “An application filed under the PCT system begins the process of obtaining patent protection in a large number of countries, including the US, China, Japan and many in Europe. PCT applications are particularly suitable for inventions where wide territorial protection is required for minimum initial cost, or where an applicant wishes to defer the cost of overseas patent protection for as long as possible.”
