With the help of Independent Cambridge - the definitive guide to ‘real’ Cambridge - Cambridge Network continues its weekly exploration of the best independent shops, cafés, restaurants, venues and events in Cambridge and the surrounding area. This week: Design Essentials in Saffron Walden.
Explore Independent Cambridge: Design Essentials
After starting out as Saffron Walden’s first ever pop-up shop, Design Essentials, with its range of quirky and unique contemporary home accessories, lighting and gifts, now has a permanent home on the town’s Market Row.
Innovative owner Wendy Howell is passionate about finding stylish items to fill her shop and everything is individually chosen by her. Where possible, pieces are sustainably sourced and many are handcrafted by local artists and designers who are given the opportunity to showcase their work in regular in-store exhibitions.
Guest exhibitors range from print makers to photographers and Wendy has collected a huge variety of handmade creations, including mosaics and glass accessories. All of which go towards keeping Design Essentials fresh and exciting as well as helping to promote the talents of local artists and makers.
One particularly outstanding feature of the split-level shop is the range of gorgeous lighting including pretty night lights, table lamps, pendants and floor lights and the striking colour therapy lamps – designed in Italy and exclusively stocked in the UK by Wendy.
The entire Design Essentials collection is not just beautiful, it’s affordable and functional too. There’s also an online shop which showcases a wider range of items and artist’s collections, so it’s easy get hold of those elusive finishing touches to your own home designs. The website even has handy gift ideas sections grouped into ‘for him’, ‘for her’, ‘for grandparents’ and ‘for teenagers’ – a great help when buying gifts for friends and family.
