Menaka Thiru is a qualified counsellor with over five years’ experience. She usually works on a weekly basis with adults who bring a broad range of issues such as anxiety, depression, family issues, relationship problems and low self-confidence and low self-esteem. She works with person-centred and psychodynamic principles and offers either short-term or open-ended counselling.

Menaka was awarded an Upper Second BA(Hons) degree in Modern Iberian and Latin American Regional Studies in 1991 from University College, University of London and a MPhil in Latin American Studies in 1999 from the University of Cambridge. Moreover, she holds a Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling, August 2013 from Adult Education Hills Road Sixth Form College, Cambridge. She is a member of the National Counselling Society and is listed on the NCS’s register of counsellors which is accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.
Menaka has worked as a volunteer counsellor for children and young people at a Cambridgeshire secondary school between 2012 and 2016. She has also been counselling many adults since May 2015 for a Cambridgeshire-based organization called Sky Blue. Furthermore, she has recently become a voluntary counsellor for the mental health charity Mind Cambridgeshire Peterborough and South Lincolnshire.
Menaka holds the belief that counselling has the potential to bring about personal growth and transformation by promoting fresh insights about yourself and the other people and elements that compose your world. In addition, it can enrich your own invaluable inner resources and strengthen your ability to access and utilize these.
Menaka always strives to treat clients with compassion, sensitivity and respect and create a safe and non-judgmental space where they can feel listened to and can address their concerns at their own pace.
She takes a very active interest in Continuing Professional Development for counsellors and psychotherapists and is always eager to expand her theoretical knowledge and clinical skills so that she can improve the service she extends to clients.With this aim in mind she regularly attends a variety of study days,conferences and workshops and also reads widely.

She will suggest you have an initial telephone conversation of up to 15 minutes and you will have the opportunity to ask her any questions. She will then offer to meet you in person for an initial consultation lasting 50 minutes. This meeting will give you the opportunity to see if you feel comfortable working with Menaka and will give her the chance to assess your wants and needs. This consultation will be charged at her usual sessional rate of £45 per 50-minute session. If after this you choose to proceed with counselling, she will find you a regular weekly slot.
