Team effort to master urological expertise

02-11-2018

Consultants at Addenbrooke’s Hospital are passing on years of knowledge to junior doctors by developing a degree course for aspiring young urologists, which is one of the first of its kind in the UK.

The course delivers lectures, clinical attachments, and distance learning modules in its first year and self-driven research in the second.

Four junior doctors -  Lisa Farquhar, Asif Ansar, Mohammed Abu Yousif and Mostafa Ragab  -have just become the first to be awarded their Master’s degree at a university ceremony at Cambridge Corn Exchange in October.

Since they started there have been another three intakes, attracting junior doctors from all over the world including India, Pakistan and Australia.

Urology consultant Suzanne Biers, who is course leader and honorary senior lecturer, said the intention is to provide skills and experience in research to improve career progression and foster the next generation of research-minded urologists.

She added: “The celebrations at the Corn Exchange were very special because the master’s course is one of the first of its kind in the UK and the four students were the first to complete it.

“We are incredibly proud to have this opportunity to work with colleagues at Anglia Ruskin to preserve and pass on knowledge that has been acquired within this department over many years and is constantly developing.”

Anglia Ruskin University MCh Urology course leader Dr Francesca Panin said: “We are delighted to working in collaboration with CUH on something that is unique, and improves the knowledge of doctors who work in a particularly challenging area of medicine.”
