Date for your diary not to be missed - Saturday 29th June

Arthur Rank Hospice is inviting residents of Cambridgeshire to join them at their Summer Fete on Saturday 29 June.  Following the success of last year, this will be the second fete hosted at its home in Shelford Bottom. More than £4275 was raised last year for the Charity and hopes are high that a similar sum will be raised this year, as even more visitors are welcomed to find out what the Hospice is really like.

Door opens at 1.00pm and admission is free of charge.  In 2018, 400 guests enjoyed all the fun of a traditional summer fete in the Hospice’s grounds and gardens. Many who were visiting the Hospice in its Shelford Bottom home for the first time, were surprised about what a bright, warm and welcoming place it is.

Community Fundraiser, Bec Beattie, explains:

“We are passionate that the Hospice should be a community hub for all of the community, whether your family has experienced our care, or not.  As such the Summer Fete is a wonderful opportunity for us to invite families, patients, staff, volunteers and trustees to join us to enjoy a day of fun and games.

It was gloriously sunny last year, so we are keeping our fingers crossed that the weather is kind to us once more.  We look forward to showing you around our beautiful grounds and have all sorts of treats in store to keep you well fed and entertained. Please let your friends, family and neighbours know that they are welcome – the more the merrier!”

Residents who live close to the Hospice, may have recently noticed estate agent boards publicising the date of the Fete, appear outside supporters’ houses. Martin & Co – who are kindly sponsoring Arthur Rank Hospice’s Summer Fete for a second year – have donated £10 for each of the 60 boards placed, raising a tremendous £600 towards the event already!

During the afternoon until 4pm, the Hospice’s Bistro will host everything from a children’s toy store to hand made craft items, sweets to pre-loved clothing, puzzles to plants.  Prizes will be on offer with a raffle and outside, the Hospice gardens’ will be transformed into a kid-friendly kingdom of face-painting and traditional village fete games – like Splat the Rat, a Coconut Shy, Hook-a-Duck, Spin the Wheel, Play Your Cards Right.

Hot dogs, beef burgers and vegetarian options will be served up by the Hospice’s catering team, thanks to  generous donations from Barker Bros Butchers (Great Shelford) and Banthorpe Walker Roofing Ltd who have kindly provided sponsorship for the BBQ. Strawberries and cream courtesy of Kale and Damson and ice-creams courtesy of Toni’s Ices will be on sale, with both kindly donating a percentage of their profits on the day.

Musical entertainment will be provided by Jazz Wave Jazz Band, and Arthur Rank Hospice’s two choirs, Sister Shed and Sky Larks. Arthur Bear will be making a welcome appearance and is available for high-fives and photo opportunities and there will be a children’s play area set up in the Gym.

In a special new initiative, ‘Sunflower Memories’ will be on display for the Fete and throughout July around the Hospice’s gardens, before being made available for donors to keep. To find out how to dedicate a sunflower in memory of someone you love, visit arhc.org.uk/sunflower or call Chloe Laurance on 01223 675893.

Arthur Rank Hospice Charity supports people in Cambridgeshire living with an advanced serious illness or a life-limiting condition and those who need end-of-life care. Our ‘Outstanding’ services are provided free of charge to patients and their families.

We care for more than 4,100 patients each year at our Hospice in Cambridge, the Alan Hudson Day Treatment Centre in Wisbech and in patients’ own homes via the Arthur Rank Community Team. This care supports people to improve their quality of life and fulfil their end of their life choices.

It will cost £10.5 million in 2021/2022 to run our services, which are provided free of charge to patients and their loved ones. We have currently secured £6.98 million from the NHS, meaning that £3.52 million needs to be raised through donations, fundraising activities and trading. We are extremely grateful to our local community for the continual dedication, commitment and generosity they show in supporting us to meet this target.
