More than 1000 companies have now registered their details on to the Cambridge Network database, and the numbers continue to grow.

The 1000th organisation to input its details via this website was , which registered last month. The venture capital arm of the Anschutz Company of Denver, Colorado, it has now also joined the Network as a full member.

Anschutz Company is the holding company for Denver entrepreneur Philip Anschutz, who has built it into one of the largest privately owned and operated companies in the United States. AIC founded and incubated Qwest Communications in the US through the 1990s, and focuses on growing and supporting emerging high-technology companies, particularly in the telecommunications, internet and network infrastructure sectors.

Its venture capital activity in Europe has followed on from the success of KPNQwest, the pan European telecom joint venture of Qwest and KPN, the Dutch PTT.

Robert Wardrop, managing director of AIC Europe, said: 'We recently set up a private equity team in Europe as we recognise that exciting things are happening in the high-tech industries there. Cambridge in particular is pre-eminent in this sector and we are already talking to a number of companies that interest us.

'AIC joined the Cambridge Network because of its role as a conduit of information about technology companies in the region, and because it gives us access to what is happening here. Obviously it helps us if people know who we are, so the Network is also a good way of giving AIC that visibility.'

The Network was set up in 1998 by six of Cambridge's key organisations to promote the area as an international high technology centre of excellence. It gives Cambridge's high-tech community a voice and provides a focus for organisations and individuals outside the area to find out about, and participate in, the vibrant economy of the Eastern region.

Suzy Howes, Network Administrator, comments: 'The Network has grown in standing to the point where two or three companies are registering their details every day, and many are then joining the Network as members as well. Although these are predominantly from the Greater Cambridge area, we do have increasing numbers of organisations from outside the UK, including Belgium, the US, Canada and Japan.

'Since Anschutz registered last month, a further 65 companies have registered on the site. We also have a directory of nearly 700 individuals.'
